In the first week of Nov 2013, during the Diwali holidays we made this trip.
Following was the route we travelled :
Bangkok->Hanoi->HoChiMinh City->Phnom Penh->Siem Reap->Bangkok (10 days)
Day by day Itinerary with details:
Day 0 – we took the Chennai Bangkok flight – 10:30PM (AirAsia)
Day 1 – reached BKK by 3:30AM local time. We had already taken double entry Thai-visa from Chennai/Bangalore visa office (4k INR) so one entry we used there and then. Then we had to take the 8AM flight to Hanoi (AirAsia), reaching there by 10AM. Vietnam allows visa-on-arrival at certain airports for Indians. But the visa rules keeps changing (refer this link for the latest rules). Since we were five people taking a taxi from airport to our hotel was economical. It took us another 45 mins to reach there. checked in the hotel, freshened up and started local sightseeing. We were able to find tour agents giving trips to Halong Bay and many other places starting from 10-15 USD (negotiable). We went around the Lake in Old town, checked out few temples, War Memorial, and the local markets.
Day 2 – Halong Bay tour, picked up at 8AM from the hotel, minibus transfers took around 2 hours and we were on an old barge ship by 10AM. food was included in the prices. We did kayaking, visit to few villages on the Halong Bay and then sailing roundtrip. Also visited a cave inside a rock formation. was back in Hanoi by 7PM.
Day 3 – we had booked another trip to Ninh Binh caves and Perfume Pagoda. Highly enjoyable I would say. The Ninh Binh caves were made by rivers running under mountains and we were taken in by boats which was very captivating. Returned back to Hanoi by 7PM and took the 10PM Vietjet flight to HoChiMinh City landing at midnight. took a taxi to hotel and slept.
Day 4 – rented bikes and made a trip to Cu Chi tunnels and guns shooting range ourselves. night was free for partying.
Day 5 – there is only one bus to Phnom Penh leaving at 6AM everyday so we took that. reached Phonom Penh by 2PM afternoon. checked into Hotel, relaxed a bit and visited shooting range and S21 killing fields. Went to waterfront riverside in evening.
Day 6 – half day sightseeing in Phnom Penh, went to Genocide museum and then took afternoon shared cab to Siem Reap. reached there by 9PM
Day 7 – Siem Reap sightseeing – Angkor wat
Day 8 – morning taxi to Poipet border, crossing on foot and taking another taxi on Aranyaprathet (thai side). reached BKK by 4PM. and checked into hotel and relaxed.
Day 9 – since I had already been in Bangkok before I made a day trip to Ayuttaya and came back in the after noon. Fixed price minibuses leave from the bus stand below Victory Monument metro station in Bangkok.
Day 10 – half day sightseeing in Bangkok in the Chatuchak market and return back to Chennai by evening flight
